They wrote about intelligent homes, robots, artificial intelligence, genetic technologies, virtual reality and a society increasingly shaped by networks. Now that 2025 has passed, we can ask a question their original readers could not: how much of that future actually arrived?

In 1997, the future still looked distant.

The World Wide Web was only beginning to enter ordinary homes. Google had not yet been founded. Smartphones as we know them did not exist. Social media had not reorganized public conversation. Bitcoin was more than a decade away, and speaking naturally with an artificial intelligence still belonged largely to science fiction.

Yet the foundations of another world were already appearing.

Computers were becoming smaller and more powerful. The internet was expanding. The Human Genome Project was underway. Automation was transforming industry. Virtual reality had become a recurring promise of the technological future.

Against this background, futurists Joseph F. Coates, John B. Mahaffie and Andy Hines produced an unusual book:

2025: Scenarios of U.S. and Global Society Reshaped by Science and Technology.

Its first printing appeared in February 1997.

Rather than simply listing predictions, the authors constructed scenarios describing how science and technology might reshape everyday life, industry, medicine, housing, education, transportation and society by the year 2025.

Their imagined future is now our past.

And that gives the book a second life.

Not as prophecy.

But as an experiment in how well human beings can see what is coming.

🔭 Looking at 2025 from 1997

The central idea behind 2025 was ambitious.

The authors identified four technological forces they believed would play a major role in reshaping society:

information technology, materials technology, genetics and energy technology.

Alongside them they identified another powerful force — environmentalism — not as a technology itself, but as a changing global orientation.

Seen from 2026, the choice is striking.

Information technology has become part of the infrastructure of civilization. Genetics has moved from an expensive research frontier toward practical medicine. Renewable energy has expanded dramatically. Advanced materials quietly shape electronics, medicine, construction and manufacturing.

Environmental questions, meanwhile, have moved from the margins toward the center of global debates about energy, economics and development.

The authors did not foresee every technology that would matter.

But they recognized several of the forces that would shape the next three decades.

That distinction matters.

Forecasting the future rarely means predicting individual inventions.

Often it means identifying the currents beneath them.

🏠 The Smart Home Before the Smart Home

One of the book’s earliest chapters is called “Smart Living.”

It describes homes transformed internally by information technology, automation and increasingly integrated systems.

The authors imagined rooms capable of recognizing occupants and adapting to their preferences. Home systems would communicate with one another. Energy use, security, maintenance and environmental controls would become increasingly automated.

In one sense, that future arrived.

A modern home can contain connected lights, thermostats, security cameras, televisions, speakers, appliances, doorbells and heating systems. A phone can control devices throughout the building. Sensors can detect movement, temperature, smoke, water leaks and whether someone is home.

The internet has moved from the computer desk into the physical environment.

Yet the book also reveals how uneven technological progress can be.

Its imagined 2025 includes robotic chefs and outdoor robots performing household tasks such as cleaning gutters and handling recyclable materials.

That world did not arrive.

The robot vacuum became ordinary.

The general-purpose domestic robot did not.

The authors correctly saw that homes would become increasingly intelligent and connected. What proved much harder to predict was which parts of domestic life would actually become automated.

🤖 The Robots Arrived — Just Not as Expected

For much of the twentieth century, imagining automation meant imagining machines.

Robots.

Mechanical workers.

Factories operating with fewer people.

That future partly arrived.

Industrial robots became increasingly common. Automated warehouses emerged. Surgical robots entered hospitals. Autonomous machines began performing specialized tasks in agriculture, logistics and the home.

But some of the most consequential automation did not have arms, wheels or a human-shaped body.

It existed inside software.

Recommendation systems decided what people watched.

Algorithms filtered information.

Software automated financial transactions.

Navigation systems calculated routes.

Computer systems increasingly participated in decisions once made entirely by humans.

Perhaps one of the most important lessons from 2025 is therefore that a technological trend can be predicted correctly while its final form remains almost impossible to foresee.

The age of automation arrived.

But much of it was invisible.

🧠 Artificial Intelligence — Right Direction, Different Revolution

Artificial intelligence appears throughout the technological landscape of 2025.

The book discusses AI, expert systems and automated decision-making in areas such as medicine, manufacturing and information processing.

That was a reasonable extrapolation from the technological world of the 1990s.

What is more surprising is what happened next.

By 2025, millions of ordinary people were no longer encountering artificial intelligence only as an invisible system operating behind a screen.

They were talking to it.

AI systems could write essays, summarize research, generate computer code, create images, compose music, analyze documents and engage in extended conversations using ordinary language.

This was a different kind of AI revolution from the one most people imagined in the 1990s.

The future did not first arrive as a humanoid robot walking through the front door.

It appeared as a text box.

That is one of the most important places where reality moved beyond the cultural image of the future.

The book recognized artificial intelligence as a major technological force.

But the rise of large-scale generative AI shows why predicting the direction of technological change is much easier than predicting its form.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" another of the four major technological drivers identified by the authors.

In 1997, the Human Genome Project was still years from completion.

Sequencing DNA remained expensive and technically demanding. Gene editing was far more limited than it is today.

Then the landscape changed.

The human genome was mapped.

DNA sequencing costs fell dramatically.

Consumer genetic testing appeared.

Genomic information became increasingly important in medical research.

And technologies such as CRISPR gave scientists tools for editing DNA with a degree of precision that would once have seemed extraordinary.

Here, the book identified something fundamental.

Genetics would not remain merely a field concerned with understanding inheritance.

It would increasingly become a technology for reading, interpreting and eventually modifying biological information.

That transformation is still unfolding.

Its deepest consequences may therefore lie not behind us, but ahead.

🦠 Did the Book Predict a Pandemic?

This is one of the claims that has attracted renewed attention in last years.

Online discussions of the book sometimes highlight references to infectious disease, rapidly changing viruses, biotechnology and future vaccine technologies and present them as evidence that the authors predicted the COVID-19 pandemic.

That conclusion goes too far.

The distinction is important.

The possibility of future pandemics was already well understood long before 1997. History contained devastating precedents, and epidemiologists had ample reason to consider emerging infectious diseases a serious future risk.

COVID-19 therefore should not be retroactively treated as proof of a mysterious prediction.

The more interesting question is different:

How well did futurists understand the conditions that could allow a biological threat to become a global event?

A highly connected world allows people, goods and information to move with extraordinary speed.

It also allows pathogens to travel.

Modern biotechnology can help identify a new virus and develop countermeasures rapidly.

But dense global networks can simultaneously accelerate the problem those technologies are trying to solve.

Seen this way, the pandemic is less interesting as a supposed fulfilled prophecy than as an example of something deeper:

technological progress creates new capabilities, but also new forms of vulnerability.

🌐 When the Network Became the World

The expansion of information technology is perhaps the clearest success of the book’s broader technological vision.

In 1997, the internet existed.

But its eventual role in civilization was far from fully visible.

Today the network is no longer simply somewhere we “go.”

Banking occurs through it.

Commerce occurs through it.

Work occurs through it.

Entertainment, education, relationships, news, political discussion and increasingly our interactions with machines occur through it.

Billions of people carry a networked computer in their pocket.

This transformation illustrates an important feature of technological change.

The most profound technologies eventually become almost invisible.

Electricity once looked like a revolutionary technology.

Today we notice it mainly when it disappears.

The internet may be undergoing the same transformation.

It is becoming less a separate technology than part of the environment in which modern life takes place.

💳 When Money Became Information

Another broad trend visible in the book is the movement toward increasingly electronic economic systems.

That direction proved correct.

Electronic banking, payment cards, online commerce, contactless payments and mobile payment systems have dramatically reduced the role of physical cash in many societies.

But the digitalization of money also produced developments that were difficult to anticipate from 1997.

In 2009, Bitcoin introduced a radically different idea: a scarce digital asset operating through a decentralized network without requiring a conventional central issuer.

Whether cryptocurrencies ultimately transform global finance or remain one component of it is still unresolved.

But their emergence demonstrates something important about forecasting.

The future is not created only by technologies that become faster or cheaper.

Sometimes it changes because someone combines existing ideas in a way that creates an entirely new system.

🥽 The Virtual Future That Partly Arrived

Virtual reality was already one of the most recognizable symbols of technological futurism in the 1990s.

2025 incorporated VR into its imagined future.

And technically, virtual reality arrived.

Modern headsets can track movement, render convincing three-dimensional environments and create experiences far beyond what consumer technology could achieve in 1997.

Yet VR did not become the dominant interface of everyday digital life by 2025.

The smartphone did.

This distinction is essential when evaluating old forecasts.

A technology can become real without becoming socially dominant.

The question is not merely:

Did the technology exist?

It is also:

Did people actually organize their lives around it?

For virtual reality, the answer so far is only partly.

🚄 The Future Moved Faster in Some Directions Than Others

Looking back at twentieth-century visions of the future reveals a strange imbalance.

We became extraordinarily good at moving information.

We did not become equally good at moving everything else.

Data can cross the planet almost instantly.

An AI system can generate an image in seconds.

A genome can be analyzed using computing power unimaginable to most people in 1997.

Yet physical transportation remains recognizably connected to the previous century.

Cars still dominate many cities.

Commercial aircraft still resemble the basic form used decades ago.

High-speed rail expanded significantly in some parts of the world, but futuristic transportation systems did not universally replace conventional infrastructure.

The digital world accelerated faster than the physical one.

This may be one of the most important patterns for thinking about the next thirty years.

Technologies operating primarily on information can sometimes scale extraordinarily quickly.

Technologies requiring roads, buildings, factories, energy infrastructure, regulation and physical construction usually cannot.

🌱 The Environmental Future

The authors treated environmentalism as one of the major forces shaping their future world.

This was not an unreasonable assumption.

Environmental questions have become deeply connected to energy policy, transportation, agriculture, industrial development and international politics.

Renewable electricity generation expanded dramatically.

Electric vehicles moved into the mass market.

Energy efficiency became an important engineering objective.

Climate change became one of the defining environmental questions of the early twenty-first century.

But the transformation has been incomplete.

Fossil fuels remain deeply embedded in the global economy. Biodiversity continues to decline in many regions. Sustainable development has become an influential idea without becoming a universally achieved condition.

The environmental future arrived as a struggle, not a completed transition.

That difference between recognizing a problem and actually solving it is another limitation of technological forecasting.

Technology can create possibilities.

Societies still have to choose what to do with them.

🔮 Did They Predict the Future?

Not exactly.

And that is what makes 2025 valuable.

Coates, Mahaffie and Hines were not writing scripture from the future. They were constructing scenarios from technological trends visible in their own time.

The book contains fifteen scenarios spanning different areas of society. Its purpose was to explore how combinations of scientific and technological developments might reshape the world.

Some ideas were remarkably perceptive.

Others arrived only partially.

Some remain futuristic even today.

And important developments took forms that the technological imagination of the 1990s did not clearly anticipate.

That is not a failure of the book.

It is almost the point.

The future is not a destination waiting to be discovered.

It emerges from interactions between technology, economics, culture, politics, accidents, human choices and events that no forecast can completely anticipate.

A good forecast therefore does not necessarily tell us what will happen.

It reveals what could become important.

📊 Curivia Future Index

The table below is a deliberately simplified retrospective index rather than a claim that every item was presented by the authors as a precise, dated prediction. another way to read this book.

Instead of asking only whether its authors were right or wrong, we can ask why some futures were easier to see than others.

Why was the rise of information technology visible decades in advance, while the cultural impact of social media was harder to anticipate?

Why did artificial intelligence advance so dramatically in language and image generation while general-purpose household robotics remained difficult?

Why did genetic technology progress so rapidly while some ambitious transportation visions remained unrealized?

These questions lead beyond one book.

They lead toward the nature of technological change itself.

Some innovations accelerate because they depend mostly on computation and information.

Others collide with the friction of the physical world.

Some technologies exist for decades before society discovers the form in which people actually want to use them.

And occasionally something appears that reorganizes several existing technologies at once.

The future therefore rarely arrives as a single event.

It accumulates.

Quietly at first.

Then, 2025.

It forces us to turn the question around.

In 1997, its authors looked roughly three decades ahead.

We can now do the same.

Thirty years from today takes us close to 2055.

Perhaps the technologies that will define that world already exist in primitive form.

Artificial intelligence.

Humanoid robotics.

Gene editing.

Synthetic biology.

Brain–computer interfaces.

Quantum technologies.

Advanced energy systems.

Autonomous machines.

Perhaps one of them will become as ordinary in 2055 as the smartphone is today.

Perhaps several will converge and produce something far more consequential than any one technology alone.

Or perhaps the technology that ultimately defines the middle of this century is something we are barely paying attention to — or something that has not yet been invented.

That is the uncomfortable lesson of looking backward at old forecasts.

The future can be visible without being obvious.

Someone standing in 1997 could see computers becoming faster, networks becoming larger and genetics becoming more powerful. It was much harder to foresee the particular world those forces would create: billions of smartphones, global social networks, cryptocurrencies, CRISPR and generative AI systems capable of communicating through ordinary language.

We face the same problem today.

We can identify trends.

We can follow research.

We can construct scenarios.

But we cannot know which discoveries, crises, inventions or combinations of technologies will redirect history.

The foundations of 2055 may nevertheless be around us already.

They may be hidden inside an AI laboratory, a robotics prototype, an experimental reactor, a genetics paper, a neuroscience experiment or an obscure technology that currently seems too impractical to matter.

Thirty years from now, people may look back at 2026 and wonder how we failed to recognize something that seems obvious to them.

And that is where this article ends — but where Curivia’s investigation begins.

🧭 The Futures of Humanity

This article is the first part of Curivia’s Futures of Humanity series: an exploration of how science and technology could reshape human life over the coming decades.

We will begin by looking backward.

Before trying to imagine 2055, we need to understand why earlier visions of the future succeeded, failed or produced outcomes their creators never anticipated.

In Part 2, we will return to 2025 and examine 50 of its most interesting expectations in detail — from artificial intelligence, robotics and smart homes to biotechnology, transportation and digital society — separating the striking successes from the partial successes and the futures that never arrived.

From there, the series will move forward.

We will investigate why forecasting is so difficult, how weak signals become transformative technologies, why some innovations spread exponentially while others remain trapped in laboratories, and what today’s developments in AI, robotics, genetics, neurotechnology, energy and human enhancement might tell us about the decades ahead.

Eventually, we will attempt the same experiment that Coates, Mahaffie and Hines attempted in 1997.

Curivia will construct its own scenarios for 2055.

Not as predictions carved in stone.

Not as technological prophecy.

But as a documented snapshot of what the future looked like from our particular moment in history.

Then the clock can begin.

Perhaps, decades from now, someone will return to those scenarios and ask the same question we have asked of 2025:

How much did they get right?

Part 2 of the article series “Futures of Humanity” will be published on October 13, 2026.

To stay up to date on our upcoming releases, you can subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media.

You can also join the discussion or share your opinion on the article’s topic in the comment section below.

– Thank you for your interest –

In 1997, three futurists tried to imagine the world of 2025.
